Du Fu: Hate Departures

Hate Departures

Hen Bie

Luo cheng yi bie si qian li
Hu qi chang qu wu liu nian.
Cao mu bian shuai xing jian wai
Bing ge zu jue lao jiang bian.

Si jia bu yue qing xiao li
Yi di kan yun bai ri mian.
Wen dao he yang jin cheng sheng
Si tu ji wei po you yan!

Hate Departures

My departure from Luoyang to come here was a thousand miles
For five or six years the northern nomads rode through our country.
Traveled to a place where they cannot follow, trees and grasses withered
So much warfare, my life may end here at the riverbanks.

Missing my family’s condition, moonlight remote, deep and clear
Recall my younger brother, maybe the sun and clouds can see where he is.
Heard of our military successes close to my hometown Luoyang
Quickly General Situ, retake our lands in Hebei Province.

Notes:

General Situ: This can refer to an army general with the most common compound word surname in Chinese (Situ), and/or to a very high ranking government position.
