Evening Drop Anchor at Xunyang, Gaze Into the Distance at Mt. Lu
Wan Bo Xun Yang Wang Lu Shan
Gua xi ji qian li
Ming shan dou wu feng.
Bo zhuo xun yang guo
Shi jian xiang lu feng.
Chang du yuan gong zhuan
Yong huai chen wai zong.
Dong lin jing she jin
Ri mu dan wen zhong.
At Night, Drop Anchor at Xunyang, Gaze Into the Distance at Mt. Lu
After a thousand miles, lower the sail
Failed to see any famous mountains.
Drop the boat’s anchor outside the Xunyang city wall
Now I see the peaks of Xianglu.
Have read Yuan Gong’s commentaries on the classics
Forever think of footprints and traces of what is outside worldly affairs.
Feeling like the Donglin Temple is nearby
At sunset, can only hear the bells.
Notes:
Xunyang: Now a county in the province of Shaanxi.
Mt. Lu: Steep and beautiful mountains in northern Jiangxi Province.
Xianglu: Literally means “incense burner”, it is a mountain near Shaoxing, province of Zhejiang.
Donglin: Literally means “eastern forest”, a place where Buddhist temples and a monastery are located 12 miles from the city of Jiujiang, Jianxi Province. Built in 386 AD by monk Huiyuan at the foot of the Lu mountains.
