Received Mail From Governor Wei’s Imperials Guards Upon My Promotion
Desolate land outside the city wall
Myself also deserted and solitary.
For thousands of miles, empty mountains and rivers
Tall sky, autumn sun far away.
Hear the loud and clear cries of returning geese
Frigid pond reflects wilted grasses.
Near tall buildings, thin and neglected paulownia trees have fallen down
On the verge of the end of this year.
Look back and notice a scene from the “Sad Old Man”.
Not able to see old friends
Flat eastern forest silent and lonely.
Notes:
Paulownia trees: Deciduous trees native to central and western China.
