跋 徐 恭 仲 省 干 近 诗
传 派 传 宗 我 替 羞
作 家 名 自 一 风 流。
黄 陈 篱 下 休 安 脚
陶 谢 行 前 更 出 头。
Ba Xi Gong Zhong Sheng Gan Jin Shi

Chuan pai chuan zong wo ti xiu
Zuo jia ge zi yi feng liu.
Huang chen li xia xiu an jiao
Tao xie xing qian geng chu tou.

 

Xu Gongzhong Presented a Poem For Me To Critique

This poem reflects one perspective and school, shame on me
Writers, everyone has but one style flowing their own way.
Do not need to stop and rest inside the footprints of Huang and Chen
Tao and Xie walked to very high places, where no one can follow.

 

Notes:

Huang: Huang Tinian (1045-1105)  Famous calligrapher, poet and painter. Considered one of the Four Masters of the Song Dynasty. A younger friend and supporter of Su Dongpo.  Su’s biography and work can also be found on this website.

Chen: Chen Shidao (1053-1101)  Writer of both prose and poetry, he studied under Huang.

Tao: Tao Yuanming: (365-427)  Famous and major poet during the Eastern Jin Dynasty. His work and biographical information can also be found on this website.

Xie: Xie Lingyun: (385-433)  Also a famous poet of the Eastern Jin dynasty, noted for his “mountains and streams” landscape poems.
