Walking Through the Outskirts During Cold Food Days

Under drooping poplar trees sits an open country inn
Clumps of bamboo suffer near ancestral shrines on uncultivated lands.
Egrets eyeing the water from within a screen of reeds
In the wind crows find leftover scraps of paper money.

Heavily made-up old woman
Brings a grandchild hand-in-hand with her old man.
Festivals look good deep inside these villages
Last year’s harvest so good they are all wearing their finest.
