Evening Inside My Vacation House Amid Snow and Frost, Gaze at the Distant Moon
钓 雪 舟 中 霜 夜 望 月
溪 边 小 立 苦 待 月
月 知 人 意 偏 迟 出。
归 来 闭 户 闷 不 看
忽 然 飞 上 千 峰 端！
却 登 钓 雪 聊 一 望：
冰 轮 正 挂 松 梢 上。
诗 人 爱 月 爱 中 秋？
有 人 问 侬 侬 掉 头：
一 年 霜 色 只 腊 里
雪 汁 揩 摩 霜 水 洗；
八 荒 万 里 一 青 天
碧 潭 浮 出 白 玉 盘；
更 约 梅 花 作 渠 伴
中 秋 不 是 欠 此 段？

Yi nian shuang se zhi la li
Xue zhi kai mo shuang shui xi;
Ba huang wan li yi qing tian

Stand on a small stream bank awaiting the moon
The moon knows I am here wanting to see him, so he delays coming out.
Not seeing him, I storm off to return inside my closed doors
After being ignored, moon has flown over and through a thousand peaks!
Through the snow climb atop my “Diao Xue” roof to catch a glimpse of the distance
Moon like an icy wheel hanging there upon the pine tree tips.
Most poets who love the moon adore most the mid-autumn moon
These people who ask me have no idea what sparks my love for this cold moon.
My favorite moon colors arrive every year during the sacrifices of the twelfth lunar month
Use a snowy slush and frost water to bathe and wash this moon.
A time when the whole sky for thousands of miles is a bright blue
This moon floats on a bluish-green deep pool like a clear white jade plate.
Emerging plum blossoms engaging along the nearby canals
How can all of this be even compared to the mid-autumn moon?

“Diao Xue”: Yang’s nickname for his get-a-way house. Some would call it their mountain cabin, or beach cottage, or dacha.
