Bai Juyi: Wei Kingdom Levees

[updated September 2022]

Wei Kingdom Levees

魏 王 堤
花 寒 懒 发 鸟 慵 啼
信 马 闲 行 到 日 西。
何 处 未 春 先 有 思
柳 条 无 力 魏 王 堤。
Wei Wang Di

Hua han lan fa niao yong ti
Xin ma xian xing dao ri xi.
He chu wei chun xian yu si
Liu tiao wu li wei wang di.

Wei Kingdom Levees

Cold and unopened flowers, lazy birds cry out
Reliable horses for leisurely travels in the west setting sun.
Think of this early spring that has not come forth
Willow tree twigs soft and without strength grow along the Wei Kingdom levees.

Notes:

Wei kingdom: State of Wei (403-225 BC) was one of the Three Kingdoms that encompassed portions of Henan, Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Hebei provinces on today’s map.
