Post Elegy Sorrows

 

题 哀 辞 后
愈 性 不 喜 书
自 为 此 文
惟 自 书 两 通:
其 一 通 遗 清 河 崔 群
群 与 余 皆 欧
阳 生 友 也
哀 生 之 不 得 位 而 死
哭 之 过 时 而 悲;
其 一 通 今 书 以
遗 彭 城 刘 君 伉。
君 喜 古 文
以 吾 所 为 合 于 古
诣 吾 庐 而 来
请 者 八 九 至
而 其 色 不 怨
志 益 坚。
Ti Ai Ci Hou

Yu xing bu xi shu
Zi wei ci wen.
Wei zi shu liang tong:
Qi yi tong yi qing he cui qun

Qun yu yu jie ou
Yang sheng you ye
Ai sheng zhi bu de wei er si
Ku zhi guo shi er bei;

Qi yi tong jin shu yi
Yi peng cheng liu jun kang.
Jun xi gu wen
Yi wu suo wei he yu gu

Yi wu lu er lai
Qing zhe ba jiu zhi
Er qi se bu yuan
Zhi yi jian.

凡 愈 之 为 此 文
盖 哀 欧 阳 生 之
不 显 荣 于 前
又 惧 其 泯 灭 于 后 也。
今 刘 君 之 请
未 必 知 欧 阳 生
其 志 在 古 文 耳。
虽 然,愈 之 为 古 文
岂 独 取 其 句
读 不 类 于 今
者 邪? 思 古 人 而
不 得 见
学 古 道 则 欲
兼 通 其 辞;
通 其 辞 者
本 志 乎 古 道 者 也。
古 之 道,不 苟
誉 毁 于 人;
刘 君 好 其 辞
则 其 知 欧 阳
生 也 无 惑 焉。

 

Fan yu zhi wei ci wen
Gai ai ou yang sheng zhi
Bu xian rong yu qian
You ju qi min mie yu hou ye.

Jin liu jun zhi qing
Wei bi zhi ou yang sheng
Qi zhi zai gu wen er.
Sui ran, yu zhi wei gu wen

Qi du qu qi ju
Du bu lei yu jin
Zhe xie? Si gu ren er
Bu de jian

Xue gu dao ze yu
Jian tong qi ci;
Tong qi ci zhe
Ben zhi hu gu dao zhe ye.

Gu zhi dao, bu gou
Yu hui yu ren;
Liu jun hao qi ci
Ze qi zhi ou yang
Sheng ye wu huo yan.

 

Post Elegy Sorrows

My nature is not to write prose
But naturally I compose this literary piece.
This composition has two sections
First section given to Qing He and my high level friend Cui Qun.

With Mr. Qun and I, to all of the deceased Ouyang Liu’s companions
Sorrows emerge, the deceased not able to achieve a high position
Crying and melancholy for the old days;

Today’s second composition is for literary use
Give to Peng City’s Liu Junkang
He also appreciates the old and classical culture
We all met together at my house to celebrate these people and times

(part 2)

Previously invited eight or nine people to share our interests outside these temporal resentments.
Our fond memories too strong to ignore.
I make these literary compositions because of sorrows for Ouyang
And his lack of fame and glory.

Afraid his descendants and the youth of today will not remember him
Today Mr. Liu asked me to write more that just about how people should not forget him.
His ambition is also to celebrate and remember the ancient literature
Even though Han Yu honors our past

We not only like their writing styles
Read aloud these poems not like those of today’s poems?
Thinking of the ancient people we can no longer see
Their ancient methods and models

Can simultaneously express today’s culture;
Contemporary people still understand the original ideas using the ancient methods
The old ways not temporary, do not need to put down those before us

Mr. Liu likes the poetry style of Ouyang
And is comfortable sharing him as a model
This life does not have to mislead or delude.
