Zhu Po: Three Four-Line Poems

(1)

Ancestral lands with ponds and levees like the imperial canal
Three imperial edicts sent me outside river city walls to go back to books and fishing.
Gu Yi left the land and their taxes to wander about homeless and resentful
Years later, the palace forgot about him.

(2)

Curled up moss and deep mists, hear the singing and chanting of the wood gatherer’s children
Cold fallen flowers, a few tired visitors and I returning home.
Vines, riverside bamboo and islets set off each other
Ponds full of spring rain, grebes taking off to wing.

(3)

Stalagmites from spring water that falls through a small opening the size of a goose quill
Natural ponds follow the curves of a rock cliff like the row of dog teeth.
Naturally laugh to myself, thinking of scrolls in the past, it is time to withdraw
Exactly like a snail, I return to the coiled stone steps in the mists.
