With Cui Fu, an Answer for Young Brother Xian
Smart person with Luoyang sophistication, visitor to Suzhou mountains
Nanjing cassia gardens unusual, not native to hometown streets and roads.
A place of many rivers, where several times a year deciduous trees return to green
Vast Yangzhou, several white rivers and lakes.
Yangzhou now has lower Changjiang troops
Orchard Hill garrison plays bamboo flutes to welcome them.
With night time fires, fearful people return to the protection of Fuchun city walls
Autumn wind, crane’s cry over the stone walls.
Like Zhoulang Ludi you bring hope and assistance
Couples still dancing “Qian Xi” and singing “Baizhu”.
Small book table remains in the low level official’s house
In a simple thatch hut, board game gambling within the mountain shadows.
High government officials still talk about Wai Tai
Xian, you are like the finest food on the table.
Again hear the senior ministers discuss San Yu
Thinking back of all the unconventional and gifted scholars, you are the finest.
Notes:

Ludi: Two brothers of the Jin dynasty, also famous for their intelligence and abilities, but not working for the government.
Qian Xi and Baizhu: Famous traditional dance music
Gambling within mountain shadows: A story from the Jin dynasty, where a general by the name of Xie, having ravaged the countryside, met up with a religious man in the mountains. This man challenged the general to a game of xiangqi (Chinese chess). If the general wins, the countryside remains his, if he loses, he must retreat and go home. The general lost the game.
Wai Tai: A smart and virtuous government official.
San Yu: Books from the Jin dynasty that compare and contrast the viewpoints of Confucius and Zhuangzi.
