Du Fu: Wash the Troops and Horses

Wash the Troops and Horses

Wash the Troops and Horses

Many successful generals gather in the eastern mountains
Evening reports of our battle successes, following the same day.
Our armies have moved beyond the reeds of the Yellow River plains
The danger and fate of the northern hordes have been split down
the middle like bamboo.

In no time we will vanquish their isolated holding of Ye Cheng
One successful northern general effective beyond limits.
Our loyal forces rode Central Asian horses who can sweat blood
The Uygurs in the Putao official palace require their mercenary payments.

Very happy the imperial strength cleaned out the mountains and oceans
Often think of our immortal weapons passing out from
Mt. Kongtong in Gansu.
For three years missed the comforts of home, nomads under the moon
in mountain passes
Whole country united in the armed struggle, winds through neglected trees,
grains, and grasses.

Imperial grandson Cheng Wang, his efforts and largesse have
influenced the young
General Gao a senior official now, unprecedented line of leadership.
Minister Li Guangyi has a clear vision of our future
Under Wang Shili’s influence, border provinces remain loyal.

For now, we have two or three powerful and talented leaders
Time to reorganize and benefit heaven and earth.
Like some ancients they come out of rural seclusion to help the country,
yet they still recall homegrown fish
Our brothers from the south will know how to make our society safe.

Green spring again with the entrance of new officials
Inside the palace complex, one celebration after another.
All night long the palace waits for the imperial carriage bringing Xuanzong
At the crack of dawn, emperor’s son honors and respects the old dragon.

Behind the scenes too many connected to the power of the
dragon and phoenix
All royal family members given positions throughout the empire.
Your ranks of nobility dependent upon the imperial power and grace
Not a time to brag and boast of your strength.

But some of the country’s powerbase beyond your reach back to the
Han Dynasty
Zhang Zifang from Han also used loyal people from a previous emperor.
Most of Mr. Zhang’s life spent visiting rivers and oceans.
Several feet tall, beard and eyebrows full of strength.

Made long journeys to become a leader among men, wind and clouds
Began to prepare and make plans to make order out of the chaos.
The insurgents don’t consider all needed logistical details for war
We can regain our happiness and prosperity like during the Eastern Han.

All of our lands have been returned from the rebels
Unexpected and auspicious things are now coming our way.
Don’t know which dynastic ancestors have sent these gifts to us
But we need a silver jar to put something aside to save for later projects.

We want our talented and righteous to come out of hiding to help
build our society
Then writers and poets will compose praise for a clean and transparent
Yellow River.
Looking far into the future, farm families value seasonal rain and dry periods.
Everywhere cuckoos hasten us to begin our springtime planting.

Let the strong men come home to work as soon as the hordes leave
Southern city wives still have many anxious dreams.
Whole country needs our warriors to change over into the peace
Clean and wash their armor and weapons, not to be used for a long time!
